Carme

Tess, Bodhi and a woman between them smiling into the camera in the sunshine, with green hills and mountains under a blue sky behind them

After streaking through France, we drove on in one go to Carme, a little town roughly level with Barcelona. Because this is where a lovely Spanish lady lives, who, funnily enough, is called Carmen. Nice and easy to remember ;)

Last summer I stayed with Carmen for a few weeks for a retreat for my skin. From the very first moment I felt really welcome there, and every day I sat chatting with her in my best Spanish. Just before I went home again, we’d agreed that I would come and introduce that lovely man of mine, and bring her a big hug, if we were ever driving nearby. So… no sooner said than done!

Only, we arrived in the middle of the night, so before we could meet Carmen we had a night to bridge. Carmen’s house is in a really beautiful area, so the choice to sleep somewhere nearby was quickly made. When we arrived there at 2 in the morning, we went on a little scouting loop to see where we could best spend the night. I thought this was a good moment to test the car’s kit and check whether the skid plates were doing their job properly… I can tell you: they work perfectly! In other words, the car still runs.

The Cayenne with its roof tent folded out on a gravel track among pine trees near Carme, mud on the tyres, in the low sun

After our short off-road adventure we’d found a nice spot to fold out the tent. By now it had got a bit late again, so we were more than ready for a good sleep. It was the first time we’d slept in the tent again since our lovely week with Joost and Anna. I caught myself feeling like I was “back home in my own little bed”. That feeling was quickly followed by the realisation that this wasn’t the case at all, and that we were just lying somewhere by the side of the road… But hey, nice that I’m at least completely used to the tent itself already!

The Cayenne parked on the grass in front of a stone house with brown shutters, mud on the tyres, under a clear blue sky

The next morning we woke up well rested and headed almost straight to Carmen’s for a cup of coffee. As expected, we got a really sweet and warm welcome. First we caught up over a chat, and then we did a tour of the whole grounds. When it was time to say goodbye, Carmen sent us off well armed with good food and fresh eggs for the trip to the boat. Too sweet!
