Padenghe sul Garda → Mottarone

Our black Porsche Cayenne with roof tent on the Mottarone at sunset, above a sea of clouds

Wild camping with a gorgeous sunset, so romantic, until you need a poo. Luckily neither Tess nor I had to, so it was a lovely experience. We had driven up a mountain looking for a spot to film some videos for our socials. We’d left Lake Garda early, you see, and had some time to spare before we needed to be at our next destination. On the way we’d had a good zoom around on Google Maps and found a mountain just above Stresa that looked bloody gorgeous. Always with a pinch of salt, of course, because Bolzano had left us out in the cold as well.

After 15 minutes of climbing in the Cayenne we came to a little toll gate. WTF is that doing here? Turned out we were at the foot of the Mottarone, the big attraction of the region. What did we know… We hesitated. 10 euros lighter with a possible Bolzano experience, or 10 euros lighter with no Bolzano experience at all. You’re often too scared anyway, and when in doubt, overtake. So up we went.

We drove up a beautifully winding mountain road. The clouds hung above the road and between the trees, and autumn had already started to thin out the leaves, so the sun shone through the trees here and there. If I got to film a new season of Game of Thrones, this mountain would definitely be one of the locations.

After 20 minutes of winding we came out at the top. One word: wow! What a view. We found a gravel track a little away from all the prying eyes, because we didn’t fancy those for our first time in front of the camera. After an hour in stitches over our acting skills, we had a proper look around. We realised the track we’d driven onto was awfully quiet. Not a single walker or anything had come past yet. Not that strange, mind you, because a Fiat 500 would already be scraping the ground in the first 5 metres of the track.

By now it was around 6 o’clock. We realised the mountain was starting to get quieter. “Shall we just sleep here, then?” came out of Tess’s mouth. With big but mostly enthusiastic eyes, I nodded a vigorous yes. Tess isn’t the nervous type, but wild camping was new to us, and anyone who’s ever done it can probably confirm there’s a little hurdle to get over first.

Meanwhile we were treated to a beautiful sunset. One of those you can keep watching for as long as it isn’t completely dark. We cobbled together a burger sandwich and went to bed early. It took a while to fall asleep, because at every little noise we asked each other: “Was that you?” No, it was a bloke who roared up and down the mountain pass on his motorbike a good 6 times. Understandable. Anyway, after a while we fell asleep, up there on the Mottarone.

At 07:00 we were woken by a horrible noise… our alarm. We didn’t want to be woken by some keen hiker who’d set off at 04:00, you see. We ate some leftovers and rang our next destination, because yes, we were rather in need of a shower…
